What is mindfulness? How can it help our lives? Mindfulness is defined as a mental state achieved by focusing your awareness on the present moment, while acknowledging and accepting your feelings, thoughts and physical sensations. Mindfulness has its origins in ancient Buddhist meditation practices and has grown in popularity in recent years as a therapeutic technique in western psychology. However, our modern lives are a frenzy of work and family balance, financial pressures and complex relationships. We can often fail to see the positives in life. We can be guilty of being over analytical of past events, self-critical and at times too caught up in what the future may hold. There can be too many rules, guidelines and routines that can become barriers, which limit us from reaching our true potential. We do these things without pause to enjoy the present, to live in the now. For example, after a day at work have you realised as you pull into the garage you don’t recall the drive home? Have you sat down to enjoy your cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit to then notice you have finished the packet? These types of actions are things we do on autopilot without thinking, without being mindful of the present moment, our emotions or the signs our bodies gives us. The benefits of practicing Mindfulness may include: • Lower levels of stress. • Greater clarity and self-acceptance • Better control over our emotions and behavior in challenging situations • Increased creativity • Weight loss • Improved sleep patterns • Mindfulness may even improve your golf swing or yoga pose So stimulate your mind to be thoughtful in what you express and how you feel, colour as an example has an amazing vibration of expression. We are surrounded by colour every day, the food we eat, home furnishings and even the clothes we wear are an expression of our mood or emotions. But do we notice what emotions or sensations we experience when selecting a t-shirt or eating a particular food? Everything that feeds Mindfulness has expression. Enlightenment is Mindfulness. It is the key to love. Love creates fulfilment in your journey, it dissolves emotions including guilt, grief, fear and anger. Love is an expression of health and harmony. Therefore, Mindfulness is not just achieving a calm and self-aware state of mind; it is feeding your thoughts with desires and a new approach to living. My guides view it as a natural respect to you and others, which in the end promotes your creativity, intuition and personal growth. If you have any comments or tips on how you practice Mindfulness I’d love to hear your thoughts.
